19th European Congress of Psychology Students

Madrid, the capital of Spain, is the venue for the next European Congress of Psychology Students; it will be held April 24-30, 2005. The Congress is organized by the Spanish Psychology Students' Association (CEP-PIE) under the auspices of the European Federation of Psychology Students' Associations (EFPSA).

Previous congresses were held in Lisbon (Portugal, 1987), Liege (Belgium, 1988), Lund (Sweden, 1989), Lyon (France, 1990), Geneva (Switzerland, 1991), Bergen (Norway, 1992), Amsterdam (The Netherlands, 1993), Lancaster (United Kingdom, 1994), Pula (Croatia, 1995), Jyväskylä (Finland, 1996), Jurmala (Latvia, 1997), Skofja Loka (Slovenia, 1998), Troia (Portugal, 1999), Janeda (Estonia, 2000), Budapest (Hungary, 2001), Avanos (Turkey, 2002), Oporto (Portugal, 2003), and Kopaonik (Serbia & Montenegro, 2004).

EFPSA was established in 1987 from the aspiration of psychology students' associations to develop cohesion on the European level among students concerned with the quality of European psychology education and the different opportunities and problems that can affect them. The Federation is willing to support student movements defending psychology students' interests. EFPSA's internal organization comprises a General Assembly formed by National Representatives (with one vote per full member) that meets each year at the one-week congress (in April/May) and an Executive Board (every member country can be represented in the EB by one delegate) that meets at the congress and additionally in November. Nonmember countries or organizations are warmly invited to send a delegation to these meetings.

Currently, the following 22 countries have full member status: Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, and United Kingdom.

EFPSA's aims are to promote the exchange of ideas among European psychology students in connection with their profession, to promote scientific cooperation among European psychology students, to encourage improvement of European psychology education, to aid interaction among students at both an international and professional level, and to promote the mobility of European psychology students. EFPSA provides services for psychology students such as the Study and Work Abroad Service, the Travel Network (free lodging network for psychology students), the Research Network (web-based information exchange and international research on a voluntary basis), and the Activities Office (coordination of EFPSA activities such as group exchanges).

The European Congress of Psychology Students coordinated by EFPSA is currently the most important psychology meeting in the world at the student level. Each year around 300 students and 25 national delegations gather somewhere in Europe.

Madrid is the selected site for the 19th European Congress. It is the first time that this congress will be held in Spain. I believe that Spain, and its capital Madrid, are the perfect place for such an event. After the terrorist attack of March 11, 2004, where psychologists played an outstanding role, Madrid has recovered its magnificence. Located in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, and right in the center of the Castilian plain, 646 meters above sea level, Madrid has a population of over three million. A cosmopolitan city, it has a business center, headquarters for the public administration, government, Spanish Parliament, and the home of the Spanish Royal family. Chosen as European Cultural Capital in 1992, Madrid is characterized by intense cultural and artistic activity as well as by a very lively nightlife.

Acceptance of the proposal to organize the 19th European Congress of Psychology Students in Spain means a huge acknowledgment for Spanish psychology students' activities, work, and performance. Students' representatives from 23 universities in Spain where psychology is taught compose the Organizing Committee of the congress (University of Almeria, Autonoma of Barcelona, Autonoma of Madrid, Balearic Isles, Barcelona, Complutense of Madrid, Girona, Granada, Huelva, Jaen, Jaume I Castellon, La Laguna, Malaga, Miguel Hernandez, Murcia, UNED, Oviedo, Pais Vasco, Rovira i Virgili, Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela, Sevilla, and Valencia).

There will be keynote lectures, round tables, workshops, oral communications, and poster presentations. Students and keynote speakers of recognized prestige will be invited from all over Europe. EFPSA's internal activities will also take place: General Assembly, Executive Board meetings, and EFPSA workgroups sessions. Finally, after the day's hard work we will offer different social activities (cultural evening, traditional dinner, games without borders, and many more).

EFPSA is an affiliate member of EFPA (officially confirmed in July 2001) and cooperation with EFPA is continuously improving; in 2005, the 19th European Congress of Psychology Students and the 9th European Congress of Psychology (July 3-8, 2005; Granada) will be organized in conjunction close together in the same country: Spain.

As the next generation of psychologists we have the competence to approach common topics for European students, such as the upcoming European Diploma in Psychology, and this congress should be a great opportunity for it. We invite you to join the congress, to meet and to talk for 1 week with psychology students from more than 25 European countries. We will have a great time together; we, as organizers, will ensure it!

CEP-PIE is receiving strong support from the COP Spanish Psychological Association (Seccion Estatal y Colegio Oficial de Psicologos de Madrid) and from the Spanish Conference of Psychology Faculties' Deans (Conferencia de Decanos de las Facultades Españolas de Psicologia) to organize this congress.

I would like to invite you to spread the word about the 19th European Congress of Psychology Students in Madrid!
